5. Eat sugary, salty junk. This one blew my mind. When I read the suggestion to guzzle Mountain Dew during an ultramarathon, I was up for it. And from my experience, Mountain Dew and M&Ms and potato chips and cookies help to keep the mind alert and lively while staving off the doldrums and negativity that can set in during a long haul.
6. Chug fluids, keep the urine flowing. That last part may not sound pretty, but if you aren’t hitting the head during a long run, you’re not properly replenishing your fluids. I crammed water, Gatorade, and the aforementioned Mountain Dew. It worked, and I would argue that along with my sugar intake, contributed greatly to my sense of well being.
7. You are the boss of you. If you follow the previous two lessons, then it’ll be your legs that do the most talking during a run. It’s okay to empathize, but your legs aren’t the boss.
Sorting out how these lessons can be applied to the races of work and life interests me. Any ideas?
